It is an empirical study of the evolution of ethnoracial systems and hostile relations between them in the Brazilian Republic, to explain how these and similar forms of subtle hostility arise and are maintained. On a theoretical level, the work strives to contribute to the systems theory of society by developing a new systems-theoretical community theory and to the sociology of racism by developing the concept of racial animosity as an analytical complement to the historical concept of racism. The project will be supervised by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Stichweh and will run for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. A four-month research stay in Brazil is planned under the direction of Prof. Dr. Angela Alonso from the University of São Paulo.
