The project "Reflexivity in (Forced) Migration Studies", which is funded by the Transdisciplinary Research Area "Individuals, Institutions and Societies" (TRA4) at the University of Bonn, will start its work on January 1 for one year. The application was submitted by Forum Internationale Wissenschaft (FIW) and the Bonn Center for Conflict Studies (BICC) in cooperation with the Bonn Research Alliance (BORA) and Bonner Institut für Migrationsforschung und Interkulturelles Lernen e.V. (BIM). The project is led by Dr. Lena Laube (FIW), Maarit Thiem (BICC) and Dr. des. Maria Ullrich (FIW). Further participants are Prof. Dr. Conrad Schetter (BICC), Dr. Jure Leko (BIM) and Dr. Sandra Gilgan (BORA).
The starting point of the project is that research on (refugee) migration takes place in a highly polarized context. At the same time, the need for evidence-based information through science communication is high, given the complexity of migration movements and management policies. In order to reflect on the role of science and its potential for a sustainable approach to (forced) migration, we see the need for inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation. The project makes use of the high concentration of expertise in the fields of refugee studies and (forced) migration in Bonn, both in university and non-university research and practice.
In two round tables, we will bring together colleagues to discuss topics and lines of conflict in which polarizing aspects are particularly evident and in which science and non-academic practice face challenges. The project will develop initial action options and approaches to contribute constructively to public discourse and its political dimension of action, for example by participating in the 5th Conference of the German Network for Forced Migration Studies. The overarching goal is for the shared needs of knowledge production to culminate in a transdisciplinary third-party funding application.
